2009 Annual Survey of BC Dispensing Fees Prescription drugs make up the largest component of employee benefit plans, with costs continuing to rise. With an average per prescription cost in Canada of $75, dispensing fees play an important role in determining the final cost to the employer. Every plan member has a role to play in reducing these costs - shopping around for the best prices is one way that you can help to ensure that your benefits continue to provide peace of mind for both you and your family members. The Average Dispensing Fees for 2009 are, cheapest to most expensive, as follows: (1) Costco $4.49 (2) Walmart $7.98 (3) Zellers $7.99 (4) Save on Foods $8.60 (4) Medicine Shoppe $8.60 (4) London Drugs $8.60 (4)Safeway $8.60 (5)Rexall $9.29 (6)People’s Drug Mart $9.33 (7)Pharmasave $9.58 (8)Shopper’s Drug Mart $10.68. These averages reflect actual British Columbia experience and are based on dispensing fees submitted by pharmacies. Every prescription clearly shows a fee. Some pharmacies are independent. People’s Drug Mart, Pharmasave and Shopper’s Drug Mart operate under a chain banner but are independently owned and operated. Fees will vary by store. Corporate owned chain store fees vary by location depending on competition. All prices are subject to change without notice and are provided for informational purposes only. While important, dispensing fees are only one consideration in selecting a pharmacy. Active involvement and support by the pharmacist in counseling, generic drug substitution, therapeutic substitution, drug utilization reviews and disease state management protocols are also important factors.
